Personalised streaming for the modern household

Improving the way 11 million subscribers watch TV with individual user profiles

On streaming platforms nowadays, creating unique profiles for each member of your household is standard. While DIRECTV is traditionally known for their satellite TV offering, their streaming counterpart has been steadily growing as more customers cut the cord. In a streaming industry full of huge competitors, DIRECTV Stream fell noticeably behind with its outdated user model—treating a whole household as a single user, with diluted watch histories, conflicting recommendations, and no clear way to manage personal preferences or parental controls.

TLDR;

I led the design and delivery of a cross-platform user profiles system for DIRECTV Stream by translating complex logic into user-friendly interactions. The feature enabled personalised content and greater setting controls for customers, in addition unlocking richer customer data for DIRECTV.

My role & process

I designed and delivered a robust user profiles feature for digital streaming across TV, web, and app.

I collaborated closely with external design and research teams on the client-side, while also managing international time differences.

I documented detailed and comprehensive specs and for a seamless handoff to an external development partner.

I expanded DIRECTV's Aleck design system by documenting net-new components.
